What Al brings to the keyboard is far more than talent. It’s passion. From lush piano and string renditions to funky bass and drums, Al’s virtuosity transcends his jazz beginnings to an eclectic ensemble of styles and genres. That’s why his repertoire of accompaniments is diverse and deep, including the likes of Gloria Gaynor, Jennifer Holliday, Mandy Moore, saxophonist Kim Waters, Maysa Leak of Incognito, the late great saxophonist George Howard, R&B artist Brian McKnight, Will Downing, Usher, Kenny Lattimore, Goody Mob and Ken Ford (just to name a few). And Al continues to delight the ears of vocalists, fellow musicians and listeners with his musical mastery of rhythm, melody and sound. Hear the maestro play.
A consummate professional, Al is often thrust into the role of music director for live performances and shows. From securing and coordinating the right blend of talent to ensuring the highest sound quality, Al’s commitment to live instrumentation and production shine through.
The Baltimore native began playing the drums at an early age before moving to the keyboard where he found his true calling. Al honed his craft at Morgan State University before relocating to Atlanta in the mid-90s to pursue a musical career. Firmly planted in the ATL, Al maintains a strong love and loyalty for Baltimore (and the Ravens) apparent in his wardrobe of Ravens jerseys, caps and team paraphernalia.
Currently, Al plays in the hottest venues around Atlanta, at corporate functions and is on a national tour with saxophonist Kim Waters. Experience Al Smith on keys.
